What causes swelling under the eye?

The following conditions can induce swelling in one or both eyes:

ethmoid sinus infection, periorbital cellulitis, contact dermatitis,

styes, injuries to the eye, and dacryocystitis. Weakness of the muscles

and inflammation of the tissues behind the eyelids can both result

in swelling beneath the eyes. Other possible reasons include

periorbital cellulitis, hypothyroidism, insomnia, and other allergic disorders.
